A quick way out ?

Mrs Merkel has told the Turks that a country that has the death penalty cannot be a member of the EU.

That's the answer for us then. I've always believed that the death penalty should be reinstated for murderers.

So, all we need to do is reinstall it, and the EU will kick us out. Simple !

Two birds killed with one stone.

No they say they won't let a country in with the death penalty, it's codified in the treaty of Rome. But they would not kick us out if we did. They would censure us and fine us and lecture us and pull their hair and beard and stamp on the gound. But they're going to get the full use of the next two years of money before they finally let us go.

Never forget it's worth ~£10bn to them net and more in fringe benefits.

They won't let us go that easily.

Up until Blair we still had the death penalty for Treason and Arson on her Majesty's shipyards. It was Blair who repealed them. They were codified in the treaties as exceptions for the UK because we refused to give them up. So it's not true that the EU will not allow a country in with the Death Penalty... They will do many things and look the other way if they see it to be in their advantage. If Turkey were to open the flood gates again, the EU would reconsider their position on the death penalty....

There is no quick way out. But after nearly 50 years that's a good thing. Too many wars have been the result of the "quick way". The Balkans coming to mind most recently.
