Could this be the end for Labour?

Postby Workingman » 03 Dec 2016, 15:38

Or for Corbyn?

In an interview with Sky Jeremy Corbyn has said that Labour would tender an amendment to any Brexit bill about market access and protections and workers' rights.

He goes on:
"We are respecting the result of the referendum. It might not be the one we wanted but it's the one we've got."

He also refused to rule out a second referendum on the exit terms, when they are finally negotiated.

Talk about creating a tangled knot with only two sentences. There will be many Labour MPs looking at how the Brexit vote went in their areas and, having seen what just happened to Zac Goldsmith, wondering what to do.

It already looks as though we will not be getting anything like the Brexit that was voted for. Going with what Labour, SNP, Greens and LibDems want is like no Brexit at all.

I don't think it will be the end for them, there is too much residual loyalty to the Labour party.

Also the new UKIP guy, Nuttall, looks a bit grim. Farage was a big asset to UKIP, very crafty and came over well on TV. Without Farage UKIP might struggle.

Labour are in a hole but so are the Tories. The Brexit fiasco isn't doing May any favours; they have to get that sorted out.

Overall looking at the parties, the standard of politicians is as low as I've ever seen it.

There is a metropolitan elite in this country and all of them - judges, journalists, politicians - want to reject the Brexit referendum and find some acceptable form of word mangling to justify it. They are pretty disgusting people imo.

Sadly in my opinion too many are in politics for their own intrests and not for the people they represent. I do like Corbyn and think he is one of the honest few.

There is too much dishonesty right through the system at present both here and abroad, starting with local politics right up to the top, TV and newspapers are all biased and I feel controlled by the elite to mislead us all.

I do agree with leaving the EU tho and making our own way in the world as we always did in the past it might mean some hard times ahead but long term for the better.

Well I cannot square this circle.

'Honest John' Corbyn says that Labour respects the result of the referendum, but in the next breath he is talking about a Labour amendment to any bill and another referendum to accept or refuse any deals made in the Brexit negotiations. He is not alone. Some Tories and business leaders think the same, as well as other political parties and the media.

The elite is trying everything in its power to not deliver 'Leave' - the one we voted for - in the real sense.

Looking at the latest, if the supreme court rules for a mandate from Parliament, then they'll get about one or two "short" paragraphs and a simple statement. "Accept it or face the people".

You are right Cromwell that there is a significant strata (I won't call it a class as they have come from all classes), who believe it is their god given right to rule us and we just have to keep on doing what they say. Brexit is the first time, in a long time, that they have been truly challenged. Yes they want to stop it but they also have a simple reality that they need parliament and that, on this one issue alone, the people could change the entire structure of parliament at the polls.

Will it destroy Labour?

Look at Scotland. Lost every MP but one. Came third in the Scottish government elections. Is id dead? Not a chance, Scotland has been as much Labour Donkey country as the midlands and north of England. OK the voters either switched or stayed away. But they will, eventually, switch back.

The more valid question is "What kind of Labour is going to bring us into the next election".

That, to me, is the valid question. The UK and the vast majority of the EU are now centre right or further right. Hard left has no place in their lives. If Labour moves to the hard left after the next election, I believe it could, ultimately, spell the demise of Labour in the UK.

The more interesting question would be who will replace them. Because the Lib Dems are seen as middle class do-gooders and what working man really wants to trust them? They are, quintessentially, elitist and don't even seem to know it..

I don't think we can see into the future from Zak Goldsmiths loss. He won the seat from Lib Dem in 2010 and it was one of the largest votes FOR remain in the country. But here's the interesting thing. In the midlands and the north there were more voters for Bexit than against, a lot more in fact. They cover more seats and, fundamentally, a LOT of them were Labour.

Roll on next week.... Let's see what happens on the triggering of A50. Let's hope we can get back to the process of actually preparing for triggering the article and stop beating ourselves to death over the result of the referendum.
