Reform the House of Lords.

Postby Workingman » 15 Sep 2017, 14:17

The Speaker of the House of Commons has spoken......

... and he says that it is "absurd" that the HoL is almost twice as big as the Commons.

He says that it should be cut to below 400, that it is mainly elected and that its working practices (signing-in, expenses, number of sessions attended) be revamped. He also thinks that it will happen, just not any time soon.

Reading various comments it appears to chime with the feelings of the public. Some proposals go even further... ail the way to doing away with the HoL completely.

Is there a sea change coming?

Much as I dislike Mr Bercow, he does have a point. As a minimum the HoL needs a reduction on numbers. Rather than see it degenerate into a House of Commons mk2 perhaps it should be done away with?

I can see the need for a Second House, as a safeguard against the H of C passing some legislation
which could have harmful effects on the UK which perhaps had not been fully recognised, but at
the same time I do not see why it has to so highly populated. For that matter, I also feel that the
H of C could be reduced in numbers, too.
