In August last year it was revealed that the planet has lost up to 60% of mammals since the 1970s.

It is now reported that we have lost insects at the rate of 2.5% per year meaning that we could lose 40% of all species. The main worries are pollinating insects such as bees and moths and butterflies, followed by beetles.

These bugs are essential for crop production either by pollination or soil management, but not only that, they are part of the food chain for birds and bats. They in turn are food for the top predators.

I have read three and watched two reports and the themes are agriculture, pesticides and herbicides, and land management and we have to make changes, That's fine, but why have we turned so much wild land into crop production? Why?

Not one person, not one, of those uber concerned scientists and environmentalists mentioned it.

It is US, we are the problem. We are too numerous and these cowards never, ever, mention US. Yes, the climate will eventually get to us, but there are other problems barrelling along like a Rhino on steroids. Will they form a queue or will they all charge at the same time? Place your bets.

Yes, Frank. That really is the problem, but what can we do about it?

All possible solutions would, in reality, prove impossible to carry out.

Well we cannot have a cull, that's for sure, but we could make moves to reduce the birth rates in the fastest growing countries, and if they will not play ball we stop any aid.

If tough love is the only way to do it then that is what we must do.

sadly no - I could think of a few people this planet could do without

in my opinion most of the blame lies at the door of Monsanto and their weedkillers and insecticides they are random killers not choosey it kills weeds and insects both good and bad ones then the birds eat the berries and insects so they injest the poison also and so on up the chain it is not unlikely that we also are being slowly poisoned.

Which takes us back to the central theme WM is presenting. We are the problem. We change the climate and the insects die. Then we use indiscriminate insecticides and even more die.

The only possible final loser in this scenario is us.
