A lot has been wittered in the press about Tesla Models 3 and Y safety and their self driving.

So the link below is what happens when a driver, fully in control, not on any automated system, loses control of a Tesla Model 3 and takes down both a tree and a lamppost.

Spoiler. Everyone gets out safe.

Vehicles of all makes and models get written off every day and those travelling in them walk away unharmed. Others, like my neighbour L, are in minor collisions yet can die or suffer life changing / threatening injuries. Her Astra was sideswiped by a Berlingo on the driver's door - fairly minor damage to the cars. She suffered a fractured skull (head v window) and a chipped vertebra in her neck.

It's pot luck out there.

Yes and no. The Model 3 has no engine, so when you take down a tree and a lamppost and bend the front in nearly 2 feet, you don't wind up with an engine in your lap. Also I feel for your neighbour as curtain airbags are not standard and tend to stop the head v side window issues. The Model 3 has all these modern safety features plus more room and a design to allow the vehicle to take the shock without trashing the passenger.

It's why it gets a 5* rating.

With my Citroen, the engine would have been in my lap. Hence I'm a bit more careful when I drive... :D

Cars are so much safer than they used to be. I read a report last year of an MGB roadster being rear ended by a van going at 40mph.
The MG "folded like a pen knife" and killed the driver.
