Manston centre

It has now been cleared?

I said to MrsC when I heard this that the rumour about a man dying from diptheria was 100% going to be more than a rumour. Sure enough the Home Office is now admitting what they had previously denied; that a Manston inmate "may" have died from diptheria.

Which is very probably why the site has been closed down. Nothing to do with overcrowding but to try and prevent an outbreak there, and to get the site deep cleaned.

Let's hope none of the other charmers there had it too, because they've now been dispersed all over the country.

Why these people aren't checked for disease when they turn up I'll never know.

There have been other disease outbreaks at Manston, such as scabies and hepatitis A & B.

So, what do we do, we clear Manston out and move potential carriers to hotels hither and dither!

Why? Is it 'human rights' or is it PC in action so as not to offend anyone? It is certainly not to protect the UK population.

These people should be in secure fascilities untl they are cleared of disease, given asylum, deported, or all three.

They should not be free to roam.

And lo, it came to pass.

The news today said that up to 70 migrants could now be infected with diptheria. They are distributed all over the country and they are allowed to come and go from their hotels as they please.

What could possibly go wrong?

This has me fuming....

My mum contracted diphtheria when she was pregnant with my elder brother in 1948. She recovered but he was born with mental and physical disabilities and spent his whole life in a wheelchair, needing 24 hour care. He could not speak, feed himself, dress himself, walk or go the toilet. His needs dictated our lives for the whole of his 32 years with us.

Diphtheria is highly contagious and spread by coughs and sneezes or through close contact with someone who is infected, and these carriers are out there.

Give me 'king strength!

I understand completely where you are coming from WM.

I think the good news is nowadays almost everyone is inoculated against diphtheria. It is part of the primary course of immunisations given at 8, 12, 16 weeks, with the pre school boosters and again at aged 14

As Shell has explained, we're all vaccinated against diphtheria these days. It's certainly a vile disease though, causing a horrid infected web to grow across the inside of your throat :( My Aunty Rose caught it as a child, only just survived, and it left her deaf :(

So sorry about your brother, Frank :( xx

Yes, vaccinations for those of us in the UK, Kaz and Shell, but not for those coming here illegally from all corners of the globe. These people are putting us all at risk and we are letting them roam free, sometimes within 24 hours of getting here. Diphtheria is a killer with a 10% death rate.

They should all be quarantined for at least 14 days in secure accommodation and medically checked and signed off before being allowed out. Most viral and bacterial infections present within that time, enough time for us to control things.

But does the fact the majority of us are immune not ultimately protect us, or have I missed something?

Well MM, the fact that people are vaccinated against Diptheria means that we might have dodged a bullet this time.
But as Frank points out, there have been other outbreaks of other diseases at Manston like hepatitis.

The system as it stands means that illegal immigrants are not checked for any disease that they may have and that they are dispersed around the country.

Before the mass migration of the last 25 years TB had been virtually eliminated in the UK. It's back now, and the reason that it is back is because of migrants coming from countries with high rates of TB. That's the problem. Three out of every four cases of TB in the UK affect people who were born outside the UK. Until we routinely start testing newcomers we are always going to have a problem.

That misses the point. The millions who have been allowed to come to the UK, legally, who have come from places which are not vaccinating for these diseases, are hugely at risk.

So we offer them to come and live and work in our country then, abundantly, fail to protect them because it might, somehow, breach the "human rights" of those who illegally entered our country???

Sorry but that doesn't work for me. Like WM and Cromewll, I would hold them in a secure area. Comfortably and with good nutrition and a balanced diet. I would also put them in an area with mobile phone suppressors and allow them to write mail but not have electronic communication.

I would do this for 6 months. In that 6 months they could apply for asylum and if they were rejected they would be flown directly out of the secure area. I would also only allow in independent inspectors, no NGO's and no pressure groups.

These people have broken UK law. They are entitled to the comforts and security of any UK citizen who has broken the law. They would be given the right to prove that they are truly in distress and seeking asylum as per international laws. If they can't prove it they go back.

That is how I would approach it. But then I think Ghengis Khan was just a misunderstood reformer..... Right?
