Saundra, as ex RAF I feel you pain. Scampton was just down the road from my first RAF station at Binbrook.

The unfortunate truth is that we have to find some use for these old WW1 and WW2 RAF stations and army barracks, but what? Many of them are out in the sticks with few local amenities or jobs. They are not even really useful as commuter dormitory towns never mind holding camps for immigrants / refugees / asylum seekers. A lot of the old RAF stations would be best turned back into the farmland they once were. Apart from that suggestion I have nothing else to offer.

I was born in Lincoln and grew up mostly on Waddington base. My father served there for 26 years.

Living on the other side of Lincoln I never really went to Scampton. I have wondered over the years though what you would find if you dug into the ground where they re-routed the A15 to go round the runway. It is an old Roman road and I wondered if anything ever remained of it.

Guess with development of the site we'll never know.

My question about not using it for illegals is what are they going to do with them?? Because they are not going to stop coming.

I really hope it does go ahead, especially with it’s history. It could be a very interesting place to visit.
We’ve got RAF Cosford Museum near to us and it’s a superb museum, and admission is free too.
