Isn't it about time that government, politicians and others in official bodies stopped using these commercial sites when on duty?

The latest cock-up is some policeman tweeting 'Police 1 Immigrants 0' when reporting on an operation carried out in Guildford. We don't want or need to know these things.

I do not want these people reporting every minutiae of their lives and work to keep me "informed". I want them to concentrate on the jobs they are paid to do especially as many of them have no idea about what is or is not acceptable to put into print.

I quite agree, Frank.

Too many people play about with Facebook and Twitter when they should be working.

Their bosses should stop them doing this but, of course, they are doing it too.

It becomes an addiction.

I do not partake.

I have both but certainnly not addicted to either, in fact I very rarely post updates I sometimes wonder why I have them at all

Not allowed to use the internet for personal use at work

I am NOT talking about the general public being on either - that is entirely up to them.

I am talking about there being accounts held by organisations such as the police, MPs, schools, Dr's surgeries, council depts and so on.

From what I am given to understand twitter can lead to abuse. To think Bercow's wife has a great following shows the mentality of those latching on to the nauseating woman's twittering rubbish.

Twitter leads to some very good things too

If you don't use it you wouldn't understand, but what WM is talking about is that some twitter accounts are NOT those of individuals, but of companies/organisations, and yes, police forces.

Some of these may at times have merit - a police force tweeting 'we're out and about in this area today with speed cameras/checking road tax/insurance', might just give some people a jolt. Likewise 'we're patrolling the M27 in unmarked cars for dangerous driving'...
BUT, these accounts are being used by some as WM illustrated, daft individuals using the organisation's a/c to tweet daily trivial rubbish - and not so trivial too, things the general public should not be so aware of.

I barely use it, just once in a while will go and have a proper look, which doesn't give you a proper experience of it at all. The people who get the most out of it are those who use it daily. But don't imagine they're actually on there all day, for the most part they're not at all. If you follow a well-known actor, or journalist, whatever, you will generally find there's a pattern, a regular time of day/evening when they appear, just for 20 minutes or so.

Ah I have never used it so I will bow to others knowledge.
