A whole generation, my children included, will definitely have to work until they are 69. Some experts think that could rise to 77, or work till you drop.

Even if they only work till 69 it is an horrific future. There will not be any point investing in a pension they might never get to use, they might as well let the State pick up the tab when the time comes. Buying a house could well be impossible if house prices keep outstripping wages at the current rate - long term - of 2:1. Government cuts, which will continue whoever gets in, could see them paying for services we now get out of general taxation.

Poor sods.

I agree with you, WM, but what I expect we'll start to see is the recovery of self-funded pensions, and ultimately, I wonder if there will be a commutation option with the state pension. I think the latter would be a sensible move, and give the punter some freedom of choice.

Things in this country are going backward for the majority of people and there doesn't seem any political party who cares very much about it.

I worry for mine too I honestly hope that Becky's career in animal conservation takes her abroad - as is likely - away from this country

I get my pension at 66 (or is it 67, I forget) and Mick at 67 - until they change the goalposts yet again, that is!!

My ex missed out by only a few weeks and now retires at 67. That means she will be in post an extra two years; and as she is fairly high up she will be blocking promotion for all those down the line. Many of them will be on final salary pensions and so get a double-whammy.
