He put his heart and soul into the campaign, you cannot deny him that. Having lost he is doing the right thing for his side of the argument.

By going the focus can remain on the ideal and not the personalities, for that reason Nicola Sturgeon should do the same.

I think he has made the right decision. He is a divisive figure and this is not what Scotland needs at the moment. Nevertheless, he did more than he was expected to and his doggedness and commitment ensured a substantial vote for the Yes campaign.. I have tended to see Nicola Sturgeon as Alex Salmond's sidekick, but she is now a very experienced minister and perhaps could heal divisions whilst at the same time ensuring the best interests of Scotland ; if she is appointed first minister, that is.

A bit of a surprise but my opinion of him has gone up lots as he is obviously prepared to put his principles before his own mercenary instincts. Did not care for him in many ways particularly cosying up to the digger but at least he has not accused the winners of dirty tricks or rigging the vote.

I always thought there was something a bit fishy about him.

Every word he uttered following the No's winning almost choked him. He did acknowledge he had lost tight lipped, and I am pleased he has resigned. He put up a good fight must give him that. He is a firebrand. I am delighted Scotland is still part of the Union, we need them as much as they need us.

For those who are not aware, Salmond had already mooted his resignation in either case.

Yet another honest thing he has done and is being vilified for it. I hope the press make a lot of this.

Witness none of the three stooges were willing to step down no matter what the vote.

I'll be very surprised if at least one (or possibly two) of the stooges doesn't fail to make it as far as the next election anyway .... there will be repercussions over what has happened over the lifetime of this Government, and I suspect both Cameron and Clegg will be ousted by their parties before too long.

You should have said Oily..... Might have got that. Scotland doesn't really have a fishing industry any more, the EU countries fish our waters and sell our fish to us in our ports.....

Ossie. That's the point isn't it. The others may fall. But Salmond stepped away with some dignity, living up to his promises. That is going to show as time goes on. As are the falsehoods and machinations of the others.
