I was watching the news tonight and got a shock when one of the people drowned in the Cornwall surfing tragedy was named as Dr Stuart Calder from Leeds; he operated on my knee five years since. He was a nice man; RIP and condolences to his wife and daughters.

It's always a shock when you get something like that, whether a survivor or a loss. The guy who had the bunk over from mine in basic training in the Army also became the clerk in my last Unit in Germany. I was shocked to find he had been on the Herald of free Enterprise. He survived. I'm sure that some I knew did not.

R.I.P to them all.

An all-round tragedy for all concerned.

The guilt those young survivors will now feel knowing that their rescuers died trying to save them could do them untold psychological damage.

It is horrible when you know someone involved in a tragedy no matter how tenuously
