Why the NRA believe they are right

Today (in the US, yesterday to us), a conference on art portraying Mohammed, two gunmen armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles were killed whilst trying to attack the conference. One security officer was injured in the attack but not a life threatening injury. The police shot dead the two attempted murderers.

Not to get into the whole argument about "provocation", my take is that when people start murdering others because they will not bow down and be subservient to their "faith"; free speech "requires" events like this. Not only tolerates.

Anyway, back to the main subject. These attempted murderers were wearing body armour and armed with assault class weapons. Weapons which are already illegal to buy in the US although not illegal to hold if you already have them.

The reason I talk about "assault" class weapons is because of their sheer killing power in the hands of a trained person. I, for instance, could kill 30 people in 30 seconds with one of these on single shot, should they be unarmed and close enough together and within 100 feet of me. That's massive firepower and is designed for military use where there is no question about IF you should kill the enemy, only "how many" and "how fast".

So back to the NRA. I have no doubt that they will campaign, shortly, that in a more dangerous world, where Islamic crazies will try to force their religion onto us from the barrel of a gun, that a society which is already armed and the law enforcement is geared around an armed society, is much more likely to be protected from this kind of attack than one which has been disarmed and where the law enforcement is not geared up to keep the law in an armed society.

The first time that some Islamic crazies get together in a group and start trying to mow down people in the US and it is stopped by a bunch of armed citizens with pistols and rifles, then NRA is going to be golden for a decade.

It has to happen eventually. These Islamic crazies think that the only power there is comes out of the barrel of a gun. Our job, in my view, is to ensure that the last thing to go through their minds is "our power" from the barrel of "our guns".... Until they get the message.
