So, that's £50m of licence payer's money down the drain, plus Ginger's fee.

Well I like Top Gear.

And I like Chris Evans.

So there.

I've watched Top Gear since it was at Pebble Mill and only on Regional BBC.

Chris Evans won't be able to follow that act...

So they have appointed Christ Evans. The question though is who are they going to get to present with him?

Haven't seen any hints but Jodie Kidd was mentioned before and would be quite good I think, but it all depends on whether they get on.

About 2/3 of the comments I have read are against his appointment.... many of them extremely vitriolic. His promise that there will be a female co-presenter has angered just about everyone, even female fans.

I have to say that the TG formula had begun to go stale and would have needed to be changed. Whether that could have happened with Motormouth, the Poison Dwarf and Captain Slow at the helm is anybody's guess.

My take is that those who were enamoured of TG in it's current format are not going to be keen on anything which is new.

If it is both new and the presenters are an "acquired taste", then expect ratings to drop by 90% or so.

I've spoken to my European colleagues here who like Top Gear and they are not interested in some BBC manufactured replacement. They are waiting for Clarkson to appear on some new series.

All of which will lead to huge income losses for the BBC. Of which I will very much approve....

In recent years I haven't gone out of my way to watch Top Gear. If it's been on I've enjoyed it but I have not really been interested enough to follow it much.

For those who tend to like Clarkson's laid back sardonic verbal abuse of whatever he doesn't like (like me), a hyperactive, in your face, motormouth, holds absolutely no appeal at all, no matter how much he likes fast cars or spending money on fast cars....

We shall see where it goes.

Chris Evans was on the One Show tonight and said that new presenters are going to be decided by audition.
He said May and Hammond auditioned, so that's what he's doing.
He's announcing rules etc on his radio show tomorrow morning but said it's open to anyone, famous or not, so long as they're genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about cars.

Like I believe any of that.

The BBC will impose its presenter of choice on TG. Evans will have no option but to work with them.

All BBC channels will be looking out for a gay/lesbian, black and disabled, obese, banker with a car.

I'll give the new TG two seasons at most.
