It is impossible for Tsipras to accept the lenders terms because it will destroy his party....

Perhaps he should have listened... (if you get the telegraph "you've expired your count", try clearing your cookies....).

The creditors are trying to spin this as a win. It can only be a win if the Greek people vote the moderates (lapdogs), back in.

Perhaps this time they will vote to leave the Euro? Although only minor peripheral parties are offering that option....

Merkel says this is part of the cure not the problem??? What?? EU led regime change is the "cure"??? I'm sure that the people of half a dozen countries are reading that statement with barely restrained incredulity. Although why they should even be surprised is the mystery to me. This was a foregone conclusion from the second Germany came out and said they'd prefer Greece out of the Euro if they didn't submit to every sentence, word and letter of the creditors demands..

When I saw the news of his resignation breaking this afternoon my immediate thought was that he had done the job. He got the third €85billion payout. He received the €13bn first tranche payment today and now he is off to let other Greeks sort things out. Politics!

Will the electorate vote for more austerity, or will they say 'Sod it, bring back the Drachma'?

I might have a £5 each-way bet tomorrow, or I could buy Greek shares... they have to rise, it's inevitable.

In € perhaps. But if they are denominated in New Drachma, for the first decade or so the devaluation of the currency would wipe out any gains... Unless you got in the few seconds gap between them rising in value and the drachma tanking again....

He may have done the job to get the bail out. But he has not done the job he was elected to do. Namely stopping Austerity. That was his #1 priority. In fact he has made it much worse.

Hence the election.

Well it will now be up to the Greek people.

Do they want to play the political austerity game, or do they want something else?

There is no mechanism to kick Greece out of the EU even if they exit the €.

The Greek people, not their politicians, are holding most of the Aces. It will be interesting to see how they play them.

Or even if they understand what aces they hold. Or more importantly whether the press and media lays it all out for them.

The Greeks want to stay in the euro so they might vote the mainstream back in.

What interests me is - what happens to Greek state owned assets that are now being privatised? These include the pharmaacutical and energy sectors, plus regional airports.

Twenty odd years ago Nicholas Ridley said that the single European market was "a racket designed to ensure that the Germans end up owning everything".

Well everything which is not protected by a left wing socialist government in breach of EU directives. France stand up and be counted. .

Although I still don't believe it is worth the risk of a left wing government in the UK to achieve it. ..

Better to leave.

I see Syriza has split and a new anti-austerity party formed.

It will be interesting to see how the Greeks vote in the new election.

If they get one. The news is that New Democracy has been handed the baton to create a coalition. If they fail it will be handed to Golden Dawn. If they fail, then it goes to an election...
