This is probably a silly question. I have a small amount of baking powder, can I use bicarb instead?

If not, then it's plan b - fish pie

Bit late. Bicarb is in baking powder powder so I'd give it a go or miss it out

A bit late now, but bicarb and a decent vinegar (wine or cider) does exactly the same job as baking powder.

Ton, I meant bicarb and vinegar only to create the bubbles, we use beer instead of water to make the batter.... golden and bubbly and crispy batter and lots of scraps.... and now I am sooo hungry.

Beat me to it W/man I was about to suggest beer or lemonade and for a very light batter tonic water as the fluid content,

Never tried tonic water batter, Manxie, but I do know that sparkling water works well.

A trick I learnt about the consistency of the batter is to draw a figure 8 in it. The start should just be disappearing as you get back to it.
