I wonder if that is a 'new' thing because mine does the same, as does Karl and Nadine's..... and mine is a cheap own brand from AO.com (Hisense) whereas Karl and Nadine have an all singing and dancing and mega expensive Neff :?

It is known as something like automatic spark ignition or auto ignition and was an option on some Bosch and Meile models, possibly others, from about 2019 / 20. My 2yr-old Worcester CH system works on a similar system as it now has no pilot light unlike the old one.

It's flipping annoying Ria. You leave your eggs simmering or your potatoes and a splash of water escapes you come back down stairs, expecting them to be ready and nope. They sit there giving you no idea whether they cooked for 2 mins or 20, especially in the case of eggs. I was making a white sauce the other night. I was trying to whisk and pour, but the hob was going on and off, up and down. In the end I just dumped all the milk in and hoped for the best

It seems that a gas hob is favourite.

Will wait till next year at the end of Janaurt when one of my investments matures. Will use some of the interest tobuy the new hob.

It will also give me time to look at new hobs.
