Passata

Postby tonicha » 18 Mar 2014, 18:50

Having been out of goold ole blighty for a long time - I haven't a clue what passata is

I'm assuming - rightly or wrongly - that it is a tomato based sauce, with possible basil and other herbs in it.

Can I make my own? We can get different types of tomato in tins, diced, whole, plum etc and I vaguely remember seeing in Lidl's, a tin of chopped tomato with basil and other stuff - muito expensive though

I'm doing a meatball thingy in a couple of days and passata is in the recipe.

Help   please xx

It's just tomatoes cooked down to a paste, with herbs, I think. I always buy mine

Not necessarily with herbs ;)
Lidl do it in cartons - it's always in jars or cartons Ton, not tins that I've seen though will now be proved wrong I expect

It's cheaper than a tin of toms sometimes, and richer - you could just add a squirt of tom puree to a tin of chopped tomatoes (if you have puree). The important thing is that it's smooth :)

Our Lidls and yours over there do very different things Di, as do Aldi.

I dribble, sometimes, reading what you're buying, knowing we can't get it here

Ton, if you lightly blitz a tin of tomatoes then pass the mush through a sieve to remove the seeds you have passata. You could simmer it to reduce the liquid content or add a bit of tomato purée to thicken it.

Ta, it's what I thought. We get pulpa de tomate, in small cartons, so may use one of those and add things :D

I looked at the passata in Sainsbury's yesterday - they do it just tomato, or with herbs, or with onion and garlic 8-) ;)
