The top four teams are still the top four, and three of them appear to have been sandbagging. Only Ferrari have tried to impress and they had to after last year's miserable start.

Mercedes have raced away from the middle order, haven't they? Well, no, not quite. Williams, Sauber and Force India have all put in some impressive work given the driver changes and the rookies involved. Torro Rosso have been there or thereabouts.

Caterham and Marussia are the back markers, as expected, but in all of the sessions they have been well within the 107% rule. That in itself makes for an interesting grid.

If all the times are aggregated the gap between the front and back is as small as I can ever remember. It would mean that the slower cars will not be being lapped until the middle of a lot of races, and then there would be no breathing space to the middle-order runners quite a few of whom will not be lapped. Given that unlapped cars are allowed to 'race' it could be an interesting season.
