Thank you all, especially Ally for finding an alternative make. I don't know Halls as a range and they didn't have that brand at the big Asda hypermarket in Minworth; nevertheless, I'll keep my eyes open. It is interesting to note that Grant's have only been selling their tinned haggis south of the border since 2014. Halls, I see, are supposed to retail in Tescos but their haggis hasn't reached Shaftesbury yet. In fact, the big Tescos at Shaftesbury is a bit of a conundrum, things you might expect to source quite easily there simply aren't on the shelves ...
Asda in Minworth did stock a brand of haggis in a skin which you could either boil of microwave, but I can't recall the make. Waitrose down here in the Vale also did stock McSweens fresh haggis, especially promoting their vegetarian option , but there was a product recall on McSweens last year and I'm not sure if they ever returned. I think they were up by the cheese counter, I'll have to go and check.
Anyway Ossie would like to thank all of you who, over the weekend, petitioned Waitrose on the bird's behalf - because on Monday, the supply was back!! (There aren't any left now, mind you, Ossie has spent the last two days clearing the shelves. Every cupboard you open in the Nest now, there's a tin of haggis or two. There's even one under the Ostrich's bed which has been designated an emergency reserve. We've probably stocked up enough to see me through to Easter, if not the end of the season. )
So harmony has been restored, all is calm, all is bright. That strange gurgling sound you can hear in the background is the bird crooning Burn's "Address to a Haggis" ....
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
Hurdies are apparently buttocks! (courtesy Wiki)
Finally, Mrs O has admonished me from taunting my DiL (from a Motherwell / Glasgow background) that I must be more of a Scotsman than her father, going purely on the amount of haggis consumption ..... thing is, though, it's probably true !
