Another silly programme.

Back in time for Dinner. BBC 2 tonight at 8pm.

Set in different decades to show how we ate/lived in those times - first up the 1950s.

The idea was OK, but the family involved had no grounding in the 1950s, unlike those who lived the time. The wife could not even open a can of pilchards, as would not have been the case, and she apparently had no idea of something we call "gravy" to make a meal more palatable. She was certainly no cook, not even with a Kenwood chef! :roll:

You would think the producers would pick people who at least have the basics.

Well I really enjoyed it.

Even though we shouted at them during the tin opener incident!

So did I, but it was a close call on the remote v the TV screen scenario. I don't do screaming, the vocal chords don't allow it. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Ria posted something on FB about this last night, so I know she watched it :) We are looking forward to watching it on iplayer at the weekend, we love stuff like this on a Sunday afternoon :lol: :lol:

The tin opener bit had me rolling with laughter, and Mick shouting at the screen :D :D

How dry did that liver look? Could she not have made some gravy, I know they had gravy browning in those days. That would have made it palatable...... :lol: :lol:

She is hopeless :D :D

I would also argue that very few women indeed would have had a Kenwood Chef! Or a dishwasher!!! My mum had one of those single tub washng machines though, with the mangle on the top 8-) :lol:

I mentioned the gravy earlier because every single meal she served was dry: every one. Bovril, Oxo and Bisto were available at the time and went well with a little fried onion - still do. :lol: :lol: :lol:

We used to "butter" bread slices with dripping and then fry them and put some of the jelly on to make a snack to die for. :shock: :D

And what was she doing with that jelly and whatever else it was? Did she not have a sink, had the cold water stopped running? :roll: :roll: :roll:

:lol: You're right, every meal looked so dry!! I also said that about the dripping, much nicer on toast or fried bread! Sorry I skim read before, and missed your remark about the gravy - great minds think alike eh? :P :lol:

My mouth was watering at those newly dug up potatoes :D :lol:

I was brought up in the fifties and the only cookery appliance Mum had was gas stove. She made gravy with all our dinners using oxo, bisto and a little plain flour. Her liver and onions were delicious as were her steak and kidney puddings and steak and kidney pies, and rabbit stew!

My mum used to make gravy in a similar way, in the 60s :)
