What is wrong with upgrading the existing routes and just adding another line at the side of the existing one.
Will the new trains be built in Britain?

The French or the Germans would be my bet for building the trains, Cruiser. The French have had 20+ years of experience with the TGV and the Germans won a big order in this country last year for trains. No change there, then.

What interests me is the exact whereabouts of the route. It is supposed to go to "the east of Wakefield" in other words near us. Further south it appears to go through some of the few bits of nice countryside that we have left around here.

Yep, Germany, China, or Korea for the trains and American, French or Korean for the consult and build.

The one question which has never been satisfactorily answered by the pro HS2 lobby.

They claim that the network is already overcrowded, yet such a scheme would be an addition to the network and be available to all main lines. Yes, there would be areas where the new track would have to be detached from the existing route to avoid stations, for example. The work could start tomorrow and would cost a fraction of HS2 while having a far greater reach.

Just found the map. It seems to be missing us by a couple of hundred yards; it seems to be following the path of an old line that was abandoned in the 1960's.
It's close enough, though.

Ah, but look at the benefits your sacrifice will bring.... according to Leeds' Mayor Keith Wakefield who said: "It will strengthen Leeds' position as the northern transport hub, and unlock major investment, jobs opportunities and connectivity to the rest of the country."

He didn't say how, but it sounds good.

He won't be getting a pie from that chap near you, though. He has just started his business with six employees and the new track goes right through the middle of it, and his house as well.

Yes, I saw that last night, the poor sod.
Also that bloke from Cold Heindley (just south of here) who lives in a nice old stone house who is going to have HS2 going past his back lawn.
The more I look, the more I'm convinced they are using that old railway line for the route.

I guess you mean the old colliery line from Royston to Normy and Cas? The Leeds part is Woodlesford, Stourton and Hunslet so it would fit.
