Some decisions should not be left to chance. Sadly putting it in the hands of a population who either don't care or won't learn the reality is exactly that.
Witness Greece today. The referendum will be decided by some 10% of the people who are willing to vote for something which is in the best interests of the country and not in the best interests of themselves, at least in the short term.
Today the Greeks are currently split almost 50:50. The half who are for austerity and taking the scraps of finances the creditors deign to hand out from the top table are thinking only of their current net worth and the ability to keep pulling it out of the bank and put it somewhere out of Greece, which is seen as "safe". Not one of them is thinking about the welfare of the other people in their county or the welfare of the country as a whole.
In a referendum on the EU, fully 80% of those in the UK who vote on it will do so in the light of personal self interest in the short term. Not something that should be considered when the vote will, fully and finally, tie the UK to an undemocratic and autocratic regime. This means giving up our permanent seat on the UN security council and, eventually, handing our nuclear arsenal and our armed forces over to EU control. Let alone all the other things we would have to give up. The closest match for the EU is not the USA. It is the fallen USSR!
And we leave this decision to chance...... Even more so, nobody in the press will tell the whole truth or even the truth of the matter.

Those who understand Binary and those who do not.
