Sunday Shopping

Postby Suff » 07 Jul 2015, 11:24

Once again our government goes all English and talks about the UK in English terms.

Scotland has had Sunday shopping since the mid 1980's. It has had 24 hour shopping since the 90's and 24x7 shopping since the 2000's.

I do wish they would say England when they mean England..... Or even England Ireland and Wales.....

It just annoys the Scots when they blather on like this...

Maybe I am not looking hard enough, but the BBC article opens with:
Shops in England and Wales could be allowed to open for longer on Sundays,

and it goes on to mention the difference that already exists with Scotland.

The Guardian on the other hand mentions:
Giving the powers locally to Britain’s towns and cities

Is that because it will be UK wide?

Most others seem to focus on larger shops and not on any geographical location, which seems fair enough. I cannot see it working in ordinary towns and cities as locals have only so much to spend. Opening longer will increase costs with little or no increase in weekly sales. In tourist areas it would be different and could increase incomes for in-season trade.

Maybe it's my sensitivity, but to me it should be in the Title.

It won't be UK wide as Westminster no longer has the power to mandate this.

I cannot see why the issue is such a big deal for the government and media when there is so much else going on.

They don't want to talk about everything else. That would take hard decisions and work. Much easier to blather on about something which is so commonplace in other parts of the British isles it doesn't even bear commenting on any more. Unless you want something to eat or a tool for a job at 11pm on a Sunday night..... You certainly won't get a drink unless you go to the pub...
