The controlled demolition in Glasgow

Postby Suff » 12 Oct 2015, 00:28

Triggered a memory of mine and I went searching for it.

Here is the BBC video on it. Note, this was a planned demolition of a normal built block of flats. No special requirements for the kind of use or for defence against attack.

Then I went and dug this up again. It's 90 minutes long and you may not want to watch all of it, in that case fast forward to 29 minutes and watch to about 60 minutes. You may then want to go back and watch it from the beginning.

Or not...

I had this thought within 48 hours of the incident. Then I thought, "no it would be impossible to hide, there would be far, far too many things which could not be hidden".

It was impossible to hide all right.

Triggered my memory too. Tried to demolish an old gun tower from WW2 on the Thames bank right next to a lighthouse. Afraid to use too much explosive for fear of blowing out the light. It had a reinforced concrete frame and the bottom half went nicely though the top stayed more or less intact but sagged to 45 degrees and the men had to finish it off with breakers. Relieved to see the light stayed on but got hit in the chest by a small piece of concrete though I stood a long way away.
