The minority Portuguese government has been duly overthrown.

This minority rule was imposed after their President didn't "like" the last election results and offered a coalition of minor parties the opportunity to form the government (my earlier conspiracy theories that this was a move to install a more pro-EU and pro-Austerity leadership were apparently wide of the mark, but nevertheless ).

It will be interesting to see where the Portuguese go from here .....

The President did what was constitutionally allowed; he asked the largest party to try to form a government: it failed.

It now falls to the next largest party to have a try and although the grouping of the "left" hold the most seats there are no guarantees they can all work together.
