Smelly cat

Postby Gal » 04 Feb 2013, 16:57

We are letting Smudge play out now for short spells - he only 'knows' the back garden but because we have an open fence between ours and next door, he hops into her garden too....I've spoken to her and she is fine about it :)

Out the back of us is a garden/huge paved area where A. Big. Dog. lives. He's very calm and wags his tail through the fence when he spots Smudge....the last two days when Smudge has come in, we can smell a smell on his face, just his face. Can't put our finger on what the smell might be, it's a sort of horsey, leathery smell, but there are no animals like that around the back gardens.....it COULD be a composty smell, two doors further up, the guy has an indoor cat and his garden is more like a wild area, he doesn't take care of it, so it is completely overgrown....maybe he has some compost? Anyway last night Smudge's poo was very loose, not at all like him, but he was fine in himself. He has eaten as normal today, but again, as yesterday, he has come in with this smell on his face. I 'washed' it with a damp flannel, but it still smells :| Hoping he doesn't have a bad tummy tonight again. I don't want to keep him in, he LOVES jumping about and running around outside soooooo much :)

He may have eaten something outside that's given him an upset tummy. As they grow and experience life outside they will adjust and their tummy's should toughen up I'd have thought.

As for the smell, no idea to be honest. Unless he is digging around in some soil? How odd

He's bound to have eaten something...he eats everything!!!  He came in one day doing that excessive face/lip licking, like when he's had a slap up pouch, LOL

I don't have a clue what the smell is....it's very 'earthy' :|

I wonder if he's scent marking over another cats territory markings but not realising he should be wee'ing on that spot vs rubbing his face on it :) (cats have scent glands near their cheeks which is why they rub their faces over so many things)?

I know about the scent glands, but would he be aware of the indoor cat's existence since it never goes out? I'm not even sure he still has it, as another lady in the cul-de-sac (that I'm friends with) used to call in to feed it when he was away but she's been away working a long time herself...

He's a daft lad, that's for sure! (Smudge I mean!!)
