The point the MP is making is that when there are cultural or sporting events where anthems are played all the countries of the UK have their own unofficial anthems where England does not.

My OP was just a light-hearted look at what we might come up with.

BTW I know that many Welsh prefer Men of Harlech to Land of my Fathers.

It's funny how things go isn't it... Scotland has a national anthem which is not played at Scottish matches or at British matches. England, as the senior partner, has the British anthem, which is used as a National anthem, but now that other teams in the Union are not singing the British anthem someone wants a non British one for England....

The National Anthem is a statement of pride and unity. It is played when British teams complete/win for British events. However when individual teams play at non British events, they use whatever they want.

For non British events play the National anthem or play Video Killed the Radio Stars by the Buggles, I don't care. But at British events, play the National Anthem...

Splutterpfttt.

In the upcoming Euro 2016 football finals England and Wales are in the same group. When they play each other Wales will have Land of my Fathers as its anthem. England gets God save the Queen.

Should England and NI get through and meet England will get God Save the Queen and NI will get Oh Danny boy.

Scotland failed to get through so its anthem could be anything - it will not get played.

God save the Queen will always be booed by sections of the opposing fans because it is the umbrella anthem - not exactly an anthem of pride and unity in those quarters.

If England had its own unofficial anthem, as other countries of the UK do, it might (possibly) be as respected by the opposition as their anthems are.

It is strange that when the UK is competing God save the Queen is sung with gusto, but when it becomes, by default, England's anthem it is booed to the rafters. Is it any wonder that in some quarters an alternative is asked for?

Not really. It will just remove the conflict. When it's British they will all sing it and when it's the English "anthem" the others will then boo it. Problem solved, attitude understood...

Knees up, Mother Brown?

"On the table you must go, ee aye ee aye ee aye oh..."

"Oh my, what a rotten song, and what a rotten singer too!"

GSTQ is a bit of a dirge. Let's have a good old knees up song for the anthem.

The Hokey Cokey might do the trick as it could also act as an aide memoir to our nation football team on how to play the darned game...........
