Here is the link

It certainly is an impressive tent city and shows what can be done if the money and will is there. I guess that the Saudis don't value the Syrian Moslems in the same way as they see Hajj pilgrims.

I thought I'd try a little calculation on that.

100,000 tents with aircon and a full sewage and running water system. Let's say €10,000 per tent given it's a government job and there is no land cost. Seems sort of reasonable.

That's €1bn.

Let's assume €100 per month on average for cooling in the summer, heating in the winter (not Saudi but perhaps Turkey).

That's €120 million per year.

Now let' assume we have 2.4 million refugees and we feed them centrally because the cost of self cooking is too prohibitive. When I was in the Army in 86, the amount per head that the kitchens got for ingredients, condiments, salt and oils was £1.60 per day, per head. For that we ate steak, chicken, gammon, lamb and fish in varying concoctions. We had 3 meals a day and breakfast could be bacon, sausage, beans, tomato, fried and scrambled egg, if required. Oh and cerials and on the weekends fish and chips for Brunch....

So let's assume in the intervening 30 years food costs have gone up 6 times but the diet is much simpler and sourcing for millions has economies of scale sourcing for tens of thousands does not. So say €3.2 per person. Turkey has 2.4 million refugees right now. So that's €2.8bn per year. Clothes we can assume are either bought or NGO charity... But there is also medical aid and provision for births and deaths. So let's add another €1bn.

So to create the city and feed the people with the sanitation and aid, it's €4.9bn. With a €3.9bn ongoing cost for those 2.4m refugees.

What did Turkey ask for? At first they asked the EU for €20bn. Then they asked for €6bn and right now we're releasing €3.4bn to them. Of course the 2.4m in Turkey only have basic tents, €100 a go if that and I have no idea how much food they receive or how much medical care they get.

I do wonder though. How much are that 1m costing Germany right now??? Is €6bn to Turkey cheap at half the price?

Then consider that there are an additional 24m displaced Syrians inside Syria which the UN would just _love_ the western world to take on...

BTW if my memory serves me correctly, the Saudi government charges for the Hajj. It was probably cheaper due to the huge clean up operation after the itinerants left.

Que? €10,000 per tent, per annum... in a desert - reasonable!

I do not pay that for a two bedroomed flat in a good area of Leeds.

A Yurt/tent with basic communal cooking and ablutions should not come in at more than a few $ per day.

As a caring society we should be able to provide the basics.

What we should never do is to ship money to the rulers of these poor countries to buy aid. It should always be our aid and that aid should always be under our control.
