That when they take out the "lethargic generation" who have opted out of voting and self determination, the figures show a 4% lead for exit.
The reason that the SNP came so close to winning in the Scottish referendum, remembering they had some 20% points to make up from the very beginning, was that they energised and motivated the young to vote. Youngsters who had never voted or even thought about voting and they were energised with an idea of a brighter future. It was, in the end, the older and more cautious who closed the lid on the vote and also the reason for the huge backlash after. Because the young remained engaged and voting, some of the older felt massively betrayed and others of the older felt they didn't have to bother any more.
In the EU referendum it's different. The young are the one's who have grown up with the EU and have never known anything else. The young see no "bright future" in the EU and are only being told of tales of woe and misery if they don't stay. The old, however, know that the UK will not dissolve and vanish without the EU, they know of a time when the UK could, not only stand on it's own, but, lead the world.
As has been seen from these poll results, at least half of the young don't care about voting and won't bother to vote even though they think the EU is a place we should stay. The old, on the other hand, will vote and will vote in significant numbers.
Even more importantly the message the SNP clearly stated when they won the UK election seats and are looking likely to make big gains in Hollyrood (Labour may come third to the Tories and the Lib Dems may be decimated), has been ignored. Young Grass Roots, engage them, give them something to wish for and get them out to vote. Nobody is doing this with the EU, these people live on social media and the fight is in the press and on the streets.
This is going to be WAY different from the expectations as they stand today. It could go either way but I expect a lot more negative news to come out in the next two months and that is going to switch the Remain voters off and energise the Leave voters even more.
