Every single lunch and dinner we had in Portugal came with chips, rice and salad.

That's disgusting, rice with chips is sooo wrong. It's like putting HP sauce on a fried egg sandwich. :? :? :?

No fuss Di - she's sending me a list of what she can eat and we'll see what we can get here ;) and then we'll go shopping when they're here.

Thanks Vic, we don't have a Continente here, but I'll look in Pingo.

WM - every meal comes with chips, rice and salad

Ton I didn't actually mean you, but all the stuff about special food, it's completely unnecessary apart from you not giving her anything made or thickened with flour xx

That is what I was also trying to say, Di.

Some time ago an old friend and neighbour discovered he suffers from ceiliac (sp) and as I had a car we used to share shopping trips, which were a nightmare, the stuff is hidden in all sorts of products.

Eventually he gave up and turned into a home cook making his own meals from scratch. Stole some of my recipes he did. Shopping became much easier once he had identified the fruits, veg, fish and cuts of meat he liked and how to make sauces to cook them in. And a DIY gluten free diet is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying the gluten free products trying to substitute for the 'old' stuff.

I do gluten free and veggie days most weeks, my problem is that my portions are way too big.

S'ok Di - it's good to have different ideas - I never knew you could do that with courgettes 8-) 8-)

Couldn't find crisp bread, or indeed nowt with gluten-free, so she'll just have to bring her own

Ton, if you go to the VV Kitchen board there are some decent gluten free recipes in there, even though they are not labelled as such, you have even put some up yourself - Favas, the black bean thingy, stroganoff. Most of the curries work or can be modified and you can thicken their sauces with arrowroot or cornflour. Then you have all sorts of paellas and risottos to go at.
