Time for the Honours List to be axed.

Postby Workingman » 01 Aug 2016, 09:10

At least in its present form.

It is reported that the former weak and failed PM, Cameron, is rewarding friends and Minsters who were Remain campaigners in his 48 name resignation list. This is bringing the system into as much disrepute as Blair and Thatcher did.

The whole thing, where people get high honours for simply doing their jobs or for their celebrity status, is not supported by the majority of ordinary people. It needs a complete revamp. Cronyism has to be removed and it needs to be depoliticised asap.

I seem to remember that it was very similar when Tony Blair presented his list.

And Thatcher, Rodo, I already mentioned them.

I have just been reading a list of Honours on Wikipedia and it says that Blair and Brown decided not to present a list for presentation of Honours when they ended their term of Prime Minister.

That doesn't equate with that article I just gave the link to does it?

That is true, but during his term in office Blair had handed out so many gongs there was nobody left to get one, well not in his circle of friends.

It does not alter the fact that what Cameron is doing has brought the system into even more disrepute.

I think the practise should be stopped. It is stupid and farcical.

When some idiot like Prescott become a Lord it makes a mockery of the whole antiquated system.

It's time for a change. I'm sick to death of our stupid method of running our country.

Latest is that May won't intervene. Well no, she wouldn't would she. She won't want people intervening when it comes to publishing her own list of awards in X years' time.

I'm probably one of the few who don't agree. The list is quite reasonable, he's not elevating everyone to the Lords and some of the awards are a very kind gift for the years of service in the "pressure cooker" which is #10.

I heard some of the list tonight on the Radio.

Yes there will always be contentious issues in this list. However, if you want to get rid of it, the abuses of Blair "in office" were legion compared to the few offerings Cameron is giving. Blair, quite literally, sold peerages for power, influence and future money.

Just because there are abuses does not mean the institution is bad. In fact, if we don't get a balance of Lords from lists like this the HOL would be full of Prescotts voted in by Blairs....
