One for all you budding logicians out there....

Postby Workingman » 17 Sep 2016, 22:31

With numbers we go fist, second, third, fourth, fifth....... nineteenth twentieth.

Why don't we go oneth, twoth, threeth, fourth, fifth....... nineteenth, twentieth. twentionth, twentitwoth...

And, this hurts my brain; why can't we have tenteens, eleventeens and twelveteens?

What is so special about 13?

See what I did there?

Go away.

If you are first in the queue your ordinal number (look it up) is one, not first. There is no number called 'first'. if you are queued you are described as being first, second, third etc., but you are not numbered.

Why not use oneth, twoth threeth? That is all I am asking. ;)

Would it be bad to admit that I've taught the kids to think of 13 as ten-three? It helped their maths.

As for the other, it's because English can't be seen to be easy. After all we raise a house when we burn it down.

And don't get me started about the inside and outside lane on the road.
Everything happens for a reason
