A little too much involvement

Postby Suff » 30 Nov 2016, 22:50

in the changing climate can be a little overwhelming.

Neven Curlin, who owns the Arctic Sea Ice Blog has taken a sabbatical as he simply can't find the time and the heart to keep on reporting something which is so crushing for someone who really cares.

The Washington Post did an article on him and his site.

This site and its attendant blog and graphs/data site, have become one of the best and most comprehensive sources of information for those interested in the subject.

I am another who has read some of the blogs and comments and it does get things over to 'amateurs' as well as scientists in a way that is readable and understandable. Rather than using raw data to browbeat everyone he writes from the heart. I do hope he has a great sabbatical.

But get this:

"The house doesn't merely generate as much energy as his family uses — it actually produces more from its solar panels than they need, Curlin says. On the blog, he says another future objective will be to be able to grow half of all of his family’s food."

And therein lies the problem. If we were all to live that idyllic lifestyle how many of us could the planet sustain? It certainly would not be 7, 8, 9 or 10 billion of us, but nobody in power will tackle that. The economic model would have to change from continued growth to sustainability, and there is no money in that.

It is never going to happen till it is forced upon us by mother nature. No wonder he is taking a break. He is banging his head against a brick wall, and that also hurts.

This is one of the fundamental cruxes of the whole issue. It's why I stand aside like the cynical and satirical bystander. I don't get so invested in the whole issue. I use it as an interest and as awareness.

However Neven made our lives much easier by bringing all this knowledge into one place. I, too, wish him a good sabbatical.
