New £1 coin

have I really been out of touch that badly.... just read today that we're getting a new £1 coin in March this year; a really pretty one

But interesting to read at the bottom of the article is that the old £1 will stop being legal tender on 15 October 2017. Now not sure how many of us have these large money tins in our houses that you put £1 into... well I do. Admittedly not much in there but still. Just as well I saw there is an expiry date of validity for the old coins. I'd have thought that they just take them out of circulation as they hit the shops / banks etc....

Apparently the problem has been that the present ones are to easy to forge, and that is
probably why they are giving such a short period of time before the old ones become usable.

I think we have a few horded up somewhere. Might they in the future become valuable to coin collectors?

I actually save £1-00coins not all the time but this year 3of the grandchildren got 20-00 each towards xmas they do mount up

I wonder if all supermarket trollies which need a coin/token will need the mechanism changing or if we'll all need a trolley coin, or an old £1 coin

I was chuffed to bits when I looked in my purse yesterday and saw that I'd been given a Mrs Tiggywinkle 50p. I've kept it with the Peter Rabbit one that I was given a while ago. They're really lovely

I knew that the new coins were coming in at some time, but giving only six months to get the old ones out of the system does seem a bit short.

Taking them out of being legal tender in shops is one thing, but we should still be allowed to exchange them in banks for at least a year once that happens.

Apparently they have already stopped the old ones, what is in circulation is all we have. It would cause chaos if shops etc had to return what they had at any one time, and any machines full of them.
That's why the few months when both kinds will be legal.
I only heard about it the other day too.

Answered my own question re the £10 - yes.

By the way, paper £5 notes cease to be legal tender on May 5th.

The trouble I find with coins - maybe I'm just getting old and eyesight failing - is that under certain lighting, it's very difficult to distinguish what coin is which! Does anyone else have this problem?

At least the new £1 coins will feel slightly different ...

I'm still getting old £5 notes in my change. As we get closer to deadline day, it's getting a bit like "pass the parcel" ....
