A Pole-ish Mystery ....

Postby TheOstrich » 23 Jan 2017, 19:32

So there was Ossie, vacantly staring out of the kitchen window last week, when he noticed in the distance some council workmen erecting a pole at the entrance to the little country park we live near.

An hour later we had to go into town, so being an inverterate nosybeak of this parish, Ossie detoured to see what the pole was about, as had one or two other locals.

"It's a flagpole" said one. "How do you know?" enquired the Ostrich. "There's a flag hanging from it!" "Ah!"

Nevertheless, the bird was unconvinced. "It's a CCTV camera cunningly disguised as a flagpole - trust me on this!" Birmingham City Council had many ingenious ways of disguising their CCTV cameras, (largely in mainly unsuccessful attempts to fool the local Muslim population), and indeed, this 'flagpole' has a shiny knob on top, which Ossie stared at, long and hard, to see if he could identify a lens. Not entirely sure ....

But nevertheless, there was a flag hanging down inert, and the bird managed to reach up and pull it outwards so we could read it ...."Green Flag Award 2016/17" or similar - whatever that meant ....

Two hours later on the way back home - and the flag had gone! Leaving just a pole. With a knob on top! Had someone nicked the flag?

So is it CCTV or is it a flagpole - an unsolved mystery!

It is a recording of conversations pole.

People gather round asking what it is then come all the complaints:
"Blurdy council wasting our money...."
"Should be ashamed of themselves...."
Mr Altham's black Labrador pees up the pole.
"Another pole that wants removing...."
"Don't they have better things to do with our hard earned...."

Then...

Then...

Then there are knocks on doors in the small hours. Mr Altham and his dog get taken away, an Ostrich is finally cornered in some garden and is removed, Mrs Percival and her zimmer are escorted to the van....

The following week the pole is removed and re-erected at the end of Acacia Ave and it all begins again.

You have been warned..... don't go messing with poles.

Ossie. we've got a flag on a flagpole in this village. It's up on top of the old pit mound. It's a right hike to get up there and when you think you're finally getting near to the top you're then faced with a flight of 100 steps to where the flagpole is. It's a metal pole and it's a lot taller than you think it'll be when you actually reach it. Probably 8" diameter and the flag, the Cross of St George, is huge.

A few years ago it disappeared, the whole thing was gone (we can see it from the windows on the top floor), both the flag and the pole. It was during Euro 2012 I think, and when we walked up there we could see that someone had taken the trouble to walk all of the way up there to saw through the metal pole so that it fell, making it easy for them to take the flag.

It's all been replaced now.
