I have been to Portmeirion Kaz, it was fascinating.

I'm a South Wales fan, going in September to do some family tree hunting for Tim

I much prefer North Wales to the south, you'll see some amazing views as you drive through. It's such a stunningly beautiful part of the U.K.

John goes to the Dolgellau area a lot, they do a lot of cycling on and around Cader Idris and Coed y Brenin.

Btw, if you're there on a weekend give Barmouth a miss. Been once and that was enough, came away calling it Walsall by the Sea

LOL @ Walsall by the Sea! Just down the coast is Aberdovey and they always called that Birmingham by the Sea! It's where all yer rich Brummies retire to ....

Dolgellau is a brilliant location for touring around, and Portmerion, as already mentioned, is well worth a visit. If you can get a trip on one of the narrow-gauge railways, that's fascinating although a tad expensive. A slightly longer day out is through Snowdonia and then onto Anglesey, across the Menai Bridge, or alternatively Llandudno, and a ride on the tram up the Great Orme.

Just watch that Dolgellau is a fair old drive from where you live, further than you might think, because the main roads meander a lot .....

Ossie, I think it was Porthmadog where we took the Ffestiniog Railway from (going back to a childhood holiday though). I'd love to do that again, it was wonderful!

Never been to Aberdovey, Rhyl is another to avoid though. We used to go often for day trips as children and it was a proper seaside town, just lovely. We took the boys when they were younger and it was so rough and rundown. A number of council tenants from this area were rehoused there a few years ago, an old friend of mine went with her family.

Thanks Ossie, we are only staying two nights and much will depend on the weather I think  Mick has been up that way before so we did bear the distance in mind - our other choice of destination was S Devon and that took us over three hours last time :?

Kaz, we stayed in Dolgellau (when you say it, it sounds like clearing your throat  ) on our way to the Ryder Cup some years back. We also stayed in a beautiful 5 star b and b, but not this one. It was really lovely, a complete treat. We went to Portmerion and if you only do one day trip, I would do that. We ate in a nice restaurant which had books in it, can't remember the name. There was also a lovely cafe/teashop with very yummy cakes, most important when you are on holiday ;) You will enjoy the drive to get there as well, some gorgeous scenery. That was the time we visited our KateL on our travels.
