Cyclists and other non vehicular road users ..

Today, busy traffic light controlled junction in town, unhelmeted cyclist undertook a stream of waiting cars and cheerfully rode across the junction on red.

A few weeks back, group of three horse riders trotted past me on the Mere road, the back rider conspicuously steering with one hand and holding a mobile phone to his ear with the other.

If I'd done either of they in the Ossiemobile, it would be dangerous driving, umpteen penalty points and a fine. With a victim surcharge. And possibly a dunking in Poole Harbour.

Now what would the above two blighters get? I don't even know if you can break a motoring law on a hoss!

The trouble is that today there are practically no policemen to be seen on our streets,
probably because they are indoors, playing about with their modern technology gadgets.
A few years ago I Emailed our local police, asking them who was the constable responsible
for the area in which I lived. In reply, they told me to look it up on....wait for it...TWITTER.
That says it all.

Did you read about the motorist who is being charged with driving without undue care and attention because he hit a cyclist who was left with injuries?

Said cyclist had jumped a red light and wasn't wearing a helmet!

That certainly is a funny one Meriad.

I would have thought that it is a bit 'over the top' to expect a motorist to anticipate
that other road users might ignore a red light.

Cyclists who blatantly ignore traffic lights are surely asking for trouble in my opinion
and get no sympathy from me. They are criminals.

I think you're right, Frank. I'm just glad I was born when I was. I wouldn't like to think I had a lifetime
in front of me. I can look back on a satisfying and colourful life, but I am afraid the future looks quite
horrific to me. I feel so sorry for today's youngsters. The trouble is that very few others seem to care.

In London they have cycle police who stop and fine cyclist that jump lights and weave all over the road making traffic avoid them.

We are moving further towards the US model where someone who puts hot coffee between their legs and spills the coffee can then successfully sue McDonalds for making their coffee too hot (it was boiling).

If a cyclist jumps a red light, IMO, they get everything they deserve and nobody else should be charged for what happens, even if they were speeding. Charged for speeding maybe, charged for damaging someone who should never have been there? Not a chance.
