How bad could this get for the Tories?

Postby Workingman » 16 Mar 2017, 13:06

They have been fined £70,000 for electoral expenses discrepancies and its treasurer reported to the police over £250,000's worth of election spending.

In addition there are 28 Tory MPs and their staff under investigation by 12 police forces. Their agents could face jail if it is found they filed incorrect returns even if they were following central office instructions. The party is so concerned it is funding lawyers for them.

The Electoral Commission and the police are so concerned about the allegations that files have been passed to the CPS with some of those under investigation being interviewed under caution.

With all that going on it beggars belief that the Tories can claim these were simple 'administrative errors' or 'mistakes' especially when the Electoral Commission had to take out court orders to get the information it required about them.

David Cameron's chum Lord Feldman was Tory chairman at the time, so he is going to have to answer some uncomfortable questions. there were rumours right from the 2015 election that the Tories had overspent heavily in the seat that Farage was contesting.

This just goes to prove that one can hardly trust anyone today, except perhaps some of us older creatures,
who were brought up in a more law-abiding society. If I were a young man now I'd be very concerned about
what the future holds for us.

The politicians have always considered themselves above the law applicable to the mortals - just look at the expenses scandal. And the worrying thing here is the suggestions they were "uncooperative" with the Electoral Commission £70k was the maximum fine the EC could levy .... that upper cap now needs to be raised.

I always had a feeling that Nigel was stitched up, especially when the voting papers came in so late. I feel a bit sorry for Theresa May as she has inherited the baggage from David Cameron and George Osborne. I have very little faith in today politicians from any of the major parties. I have always liked Nigel Farage although he is pilloried relentlessly by the mainstream. It took him a long time but he delivered in the end, albeit courtesy of David Cameron.
