The in laws

Postby JanB » 11 May 2017, 21:13

were okaaaaay.

I can see the likeness with the grandad, the dad and Oliver - chubby cheeks, fat legs

Grumpy and he spent a lot of time chatting - as men of a certain age do, apparently. So I was stuck with the mum, who was okay, just not quite on the same wave length, even though we are both 60.

So we spent a happy :? 4 hours together, and when they went, Grumpy said, I know you're not drinking at the moment, but do you fancy a beer?

So we did.

And then various friends turned up and we got back just in time to watch the footie

Not too bad then :)
Why should you be on the same wavelength just because you're the same age?!
Sounds like it could have been a lot worse x

Or is it chubby legs and fat cheeks?

And what is it with the goedmorgen and goejenavond stuff?

The thing that really gets me is the 'tot ziens' and 'tot straks' malarkey. I never worked it out.

I love Dutch as it is a sort of half way house between German and English, but when it is 'double' it is indecipherable.

"Ik lees een beetje nederlands, maar als het wordt gesproken, verloor ik me weg."

You can say that again, and again.

admittedly a bit confused why you're speaking Dutch, but hey... doesn't take much to confuse me ;)

but to explain....

tot - until / ziens - see you = until see you again
tot - until / straks - later = until see you later

So I'd assume the first would be more formal and used when saying good bye to people in shops etc whereas the other is for friends that you see regularly

capisce?

Frank, I have no idea what you're talking about

Di, I thought the same sort of wave length, because of common interests, same sort of music etc, but they're not used to going out, being sociable or having friends, so it was hard work.
