What is/was your mum's name?

There were four Janes in my class at grammar school, I wonder if any babies are called Jane now?
And Peter, there were lots of those around.

Julie is my sister's name too Jo I don't know of any Julies or Karens under the age of about 50 Stephen is another, and Mark!

Joe's got a friend called Gary! I know of a 7 year old Julia but no, you never hear of any Julies now or Karens, or Joannes for that matter (although my cousin gave her daughter that as her middle name after me, although C is now 27 so it wasn't recently).

There was a Deborah and a Michelle at Joe's junior school, they were a bit younger than him. Deborah's family were part of the church clique though so I assume her name was chosen from the Bible.

My mother was called Doris. She had a twin sister, not identical, called Edith.

Cruiser, my Nan was Edith. Known as Edie, or Nanny Edie when we were all younger.

We had Julies, Janes, Jacquelines, Jennifers, Joannes, Janices - the letter J was very big back then!

I started school in 1968 and left in 1979 throughout I was the only Shelley. I hated it and to be honest I'm still not keen. How I'd have loved to be the Joanna or Fiona my mum wanted before my dad was let loose. When he came home and presented my mum with my birth certificate she said ok, but we're not spelling it like that, Shelly and my dad had to take it back and have it changed to Shelley. My long birth certificate has an amendment note on it. To this day I am very protective of my second e.

The question that haunted my school days was, 'is it short for Michelle'

Shell, I had a friend when growing up who was called Shelley and she was forever being called Michelle by people back then who assumed that was her name.
