Our flight is at 4pm and Heathrow's only 2 hours away but we're going to leave at 8ish just in case of problems on the motorway!

Thankfully the Winter storm they had there yesterday has cleared and it looks to be better weather for the next week. All flights were cancelled there and back yesterday!

Good idea. At least if you get there without problems and the flights are on time there are plenty of eateries on the Bath Rd or in Sipson or Harlington - a stretch of your legs as well - plenty of buses to and from so you do not have to be stuck in the airport. It's what I used to do.
