Anti-Trump demonstrations.

Postby AliasAggers » 13 Jul 2018, 21:16

I am thoroughly ashamed of the actions taken in London by some British citizens, regarding the visit of the President of the USA.

Trump was elected as President in a democratic election, so, in effect, these anti-Trump demonstrators are rudely criticising American voters, and should be ashamed of themselves.

I thought we had a 'special relationship' with the U.S.A..

I agree, but the right to protest is enshrined in law and he must know that.

In fairness he appears to have taken it in good spirit, which, ironically, appears to have inflamed the loons even more and made them look more stupid.

I'm inclined to agree with you, Aggers.

I know many (even on this board ;) ) regard Trump as odious, and it's difficult sometimes to defend him. There are the misogyny charges, for example, but we didn't get a rent-a-mob crowd protesting about Bill Clinton and his sexual antics, did we?

However, I can fully understand you're ashamed of the anti-Trump protests. These have been fanned by the media and the BBC (who majored on interviewing the protestors but failed to report on the pro-Trump rally outside the US Embassy whatsoever). Whilst accepting people have the right to free speech, I think what's taken place is way over the top. We entertain tyrants and dictators like Erdogan of Turkey and the Saudi Arabians without batting an eyelid and I bet any demonstrations with regard to despots like them would be well muted, if not actually stamped on by the Met.

The Baby Trump blimp is just plain insulting, to be honest, but what can you expect from that pathetic little weasel Khan who gave it the nod? I'm with Rod Liddle on this, I'd have loved to have been up there in Parliament Square with a cross-bow ….. :cute:

The trouble is, Trump tells it like it is, and people don't like it. He's dead right, for example, in his comments on Brexit. And similarly on Merkel's dealings with the Russians. And similarly on the EU's half-hearted commitment to funding NATO. And people also forget that he's a darn sight more pro-UK than the sainted Obama ever was ......

I agree WM, he seems to have taken a PT Barnum approach to it.

Ossie, I think that the difference between the attitudes to the UK from Obama and Trump are often overlooked. Trump may be off the wall, but he is a far better friend to the UK than Obama ever was.

As far as I am concerned, Trump is a vile odious man, a proven liar (actually virtually unable to tell the truth), racist, mysognist, ignorant and lazy. On his watch and with his approval, many children have been taken from their parents illegally, housed in awful conditions and many stand a poor chance of being reunited with their parents - his administration even expects babies to explain themselves in court. The damage he is doing to America and its reputation abroad will take many many years to undo.

Protest is permissible but when you descend to the level of flying a "Trump baby" balloon you are entering the world of puerile playground insults.
And in the terms of political debate that's where we are in the UK, in the world of witless juvenile insults.
My opponent is wrong because he is my opponent. I have no need to engage, to be polite, to debate, to provide reason and evidence because he is my opponent therefore he is stupid and deserves to be insulted.

The left seem to bask in their own self-righteousness. They are never wrong. Whatever happened to two sides to every story.

Cromwell, that man's main form of communication is puerile playground insults, he understands very little else.

True Osc but overall politics in the UK is not pretty now. The idea about listening to your opponent instead of shouting them down and reducing debate to slogans seems very old fashioned these days.
