Kosher salt?

Looking through recipes for Ramen, a Japanese style soup, and I came across Kosher salt for the stock. It costs a fortune - £3 for 750g! It is the Manuka honey of the salt world.

It is going in a stock and will dissolve, so I used supermarket own brand sea salt and I am still here.

Can salt be non kosher then?

Apparently it is not kosher as in Kosher foods for the followers of Judaism, which is what I originally thought.

It is a large grain salt used in koshering (salting) meat to preserve it and that does make some meats Kosher. It also does not need anti-caking agents, as with table salt, but nor does sea salt and that is a lot cheaper.

At the end of the day it is salt and if you put it in liquid it dissolves just like any other salt.

It seems to be a very common ingredient in may US based recipes so I suspect it's fairly common over there.... and probably no where near as expensive?
