Well, so far so good.

I have emptied two boxes. I have thrown more away than I am keeping and am being ruthless. The Breville thing and the little deep fat fryer were both completely minging so in the bin they've gone. I was going to keep the fryer but we don't use it.

Two more boxes to go and then I can start in the pantry - under the table. Another load of stuff that I haven't touched in 9 months so hopefully lots of that will go too.

Making room for lots of lovely NEW things.

I would go for plastering the fireplace myself, but it will look fab whatever you decide. I also like your sash window, lovely

Have any of your neighbours got a fireplace like yours? What have they done with theirs?
What is the brickwork on the sides and back of the fire place. Can't make them out from the photo.
Stainless steel may look odd bu it is a working kitchen, it will reflect light and be easy to clean. So it may be the best solution.
You should do an article and have it published in a magazine such as Homes and Gardens. You may make some money to cover the extra cost.
Do I see a wine bottle lurking in one of the photos?

Three of our neighbours have got similar fire places Cruiser. One has had the lintel across the top stripped back to lovely natural stone but the two that go down either side are plastered in to the wall. I'm not keen on that effect.

Another neighbour has it all plastered and I like that and another has it exactly how Mick wants it and it does look lovely.

The "brickwork" in the fire inset is newly plastered at the back and old plaster at each side. I don't know why it didn't all get plastered - I don't think the two side pieces needed it. We were going to tile the whole inset but neither of us are really all that keen on tiles and we also thought that the grout would be more difficult to clean so we are opting for stainless steel. It will look all shiny as there is a light and extractor fan up the chimney.

I'm quite odd as I really like the industrial look - I quite fancy having that aluminium with little lines on on the floor but Mick told me not to be so silly!! Now I am trying to persuade him that industrial rubber flooring would look good.

Forgot to say that I like the worktops in our kitchen to be clear too. I have the toaster, microwave, tea/coffee/sugar canisters, kettle, iPod dock and Senseo machine out on them. We're lucky that we have a big wide breakfast bar which is fantastic when cooking and baking but it's where keys get dumped, letters from school, gloves, scarves, the dog lead...and for some reason there are people in our house who are unsure where the dishwasher is so dirty crockery and glasses get left on there too
It drives me mad as the men in the house will tell you

My benches have toaster, electric can opener, crockery bread bin, microwave, coffee, tea and sugar canisters, a utensils container...... and a gurt big coffee machine
