How do you pronounce....

Postby meriad » 20 Nov 2019, 13:25

the word assume? Do you use a sharp "s" sound or "sh" sound for the double s?

And same question for the word issue

For me it's the sharp s for assume but sh for issue. But I had a friend who did the sharp s for both words, and I know some use the sh sound for both

Just being curious

Ria, I use the 's' and 'sh' sounds as you decribe, so it's ass-ume and ish-ue, but I guess that it depends on accent and / or dialect, a bit like the North v South clars / clas (class), grars / gras (grass).

I cannot find a pronunciation rule to define them one way or another.

And don't you get me started on people saying words ending in '...awing' as droring, thoring, gnoring, poring, soring or any other such nonsense.

I'd use the sharp "s" in both words, Meriad, unless I'd had one drink too many, in which case it would be the soft "s" in both cases, as in:

"Why do you ashume I've got as ishue with drinkin', hic!"

That made me laugh because one of my pet hates is when people put a 2nd "r" into drawing and say drawring... aaaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhh

Re drawing...

I worked for many years in a Drawing Office, Frank, and now that you mention it, I think that a lot of people do
pronounce "Drawing" as if there was another 'R' in it, in fact I find that I do. It just seems to come automatically.

That drives me nuts! I also use hard s for assume and sh for issue. We have a running joke about whoever it is in ads on Sky says “Sky Store” because she says “Sky Staw”.
