Strange lights.

Postby Workingman » 29 Nov 2019, 20:43

I was on the back road coming home from a friend, so no street lights, and as I turned to go up the hill there, directly in front, were two very white and very bright lights, one over the other. The bottom one was steady, but the top one moved from side to side like an upside down pendulum

With it being dark there was no indication of how far away they were or whether they were stationary or coming towards me. Then as the road levelled off they flashed past and were gone.

What were they? A plane? A UFO? A spaceship? No! They were the LED helmet and handlebar lights of a cyclist and the idiot was in dark clothing.
:o     Phew!

TBH I was a bit perturbed at first.... and some of these new lights are so small yet so bight that they can temporarily blind you in the pitch black.

These LED lights are getting to be a bit of a pain, to be honest. When driving in the dark, I now reset my internal mirror so I don't get the glare of the car headlights following me …….

As for the plane / UFO / spaceship, I remember way backalong a client telling me that he'd had a phone call from his wife who, on an absolutely straight road on the Somerset Levels, had managed to drive into a ditch. What apparently happened was she'd been "overtaken" by an RAF Hercules which had come up the road right behind her at a height of about 200 feet off the ground and she hadn't realised it was there until it suddenly appeared right in front of her ....

Ossie, I was often on airfield patrol 'Arrester' in case of an emergency landing when we were night flying in the RAF. We could see the planes coming home but we had no idea how far out they were nor their speed - Tower did but not us. There was no sound till they were over the airfield so I can fully understand the Herculese incident.

I walked home from work yesterday at 6pm. There was a really bright light coming towards me, as bright as the headlights on a car but on the pavement. I couldn't work out if it was on a bike, but it seemed to low, a helmet but again too low, then as it got closer it revealed itself as a light on the handlebars of one of those motorised scooters being ridden by a young woman. She said sorry as it was obvious I couldn't work out which way to go to avoid it. Its one thing being dazzled on the roads, but on the pavement is a new one
