I remember little burn marks on the carpet from embers. I think my main memory of the coal fire though is not being allowed downstairs on Christmas morning until my Dad had lit the fire and got it burning well. I think we had it removed and replaced with a gas one when I was 5 or 6.
My Nan always had a roaring coal fire, being the widow of a retired miner though she got free coal. Me and my aunty were reminiscing about it recently actually, you'd leave red faced - and red legged if you sat too close
