Anyone can make a "sandstorm" mask as per those we made in the desert out of an old pillowcase or T shirt. They would be just as good as the paper masks, and also washable for re-use.

T Shirt:

Cut a strip about 7" (18cm) deep from the hem, then slice up one side. Lay out flat and from each end cut towards the centre to make 1.5" (4cm) tie cords. The uncut bit should be 5" to 6" either side of the centre line. Fold the flaps in one over the other so that the face covering is three layers thick. Tack the edges with a few stitches or use paper staples to hold them in place. Put the hem edge over your nose and tie at the back of your head over your ears. Pull the bottom under your chin and tie the cords on the top of your head. Done.

Use colourful or patterned fabrics for that essential 2020 look. You might look a Dick, but no more so than in a paper version, and they will be just as effective. Cheap as chips and cut off T shirts could be all the rage come the summer.

The key point is the red valve in the centre. Without it you are pushing your breath and moisture back through the mask, which degrades the protection rapidly. The valve allows your breath out.

More seriously and worrying for our family. Becks has just message to say that the neighbouring district in Hanoi, Vietnam, has just gone under quarantine. That's the whole area, nobody in or out, roadblocks, the full Monty.

Vietnam was declared as clear just this week but this new case or cases has destroyed that. However, the Viets are taking no chances nor wasting time, they are acting.

Thanks Kaz xxx We have spoken on Whatsapp and she's quite relaxed about it. She is getting food and water in and limiting contact with others and is preparing for a Netflix bingefest. Most of the people in her residence are in the same position as she is in - no work, stuck indoors - and they are all doing the same things as Becks.

With cases in Leeds, in the next neighbourhood, going up she is probably as well off staying put!
