Will these drive us mad?

Postby Workingman » 20 May 2020, 11:11

A company has come up with a 2m warning device to make us do social distancing.

From what I have seen on my few shopping trips, articles on the Internet and on the TV news these things will be pinging away ten to the dozen all day - well, they will for those who have them.

The thing is that for them to be of any real use then everybody has to have one, and that's not really practical. They might be of some use in factories and offices where each worker picks one up as they start a shift and then hands it back as they leave - call it a H&S cover all. But for the general public?

Ping-ping-ping-ping-ping. Maybe not.

Bonkers idea. Its most likely consequence will be a rise in arguments / fistfights in supermarkets.

People will just learn to ignore them, as they have with car and burglar alarms

At first glance they do appear to be a solution looking for a problem, but I can see them working, to some degree, in an office or other workplace where people are moving around each other in order to get the job done, but just not out on the streets.

Most sensible people do seem to have figured out what 2m feels like and appear to be trying to stick with it. It is not as though 2m 1cm is super safe and 1m 99cm is deadly, so a beeper is not going to change things that much.

It's a bit nuts imo. A bit too much.
