You pays your money.....

Postby Workingman » 26 Jul 2020, 11:42

I am getting heartily sick of people bleating about holiday disruption, delays, cancellations and isolation because of Covid.

The virus has been about for months. Lockdowns have been in place worldwide for months. Travel restrictions between different countries have been in place for months. Warnings that things could change in an instant have been out there for months. It is all constantly in the news and in your faces every damned day!

So, if you sod off, because you're worth it, and things change whilst you are away - hard cheese. The info and warnings were out there so just put up and shut up.

I don't know why people bother to book holidays abroad.

I must confess I also don't understand the clamour for foreign holidays, but there again. you wouldn't get me up in one o' they things anyway .... ;)

But given the current situation, and the fact that Covid isn't going away and can spike very quickly, there's an obviously increased level of risk in any overseas travel ATM. You can still go - Easyjet are still flying - but you're going to have to accept that risk, the invalidation of travel insurance being just one factor.

As we've said elsewhere, the Government handling of the issue has been and continues to be frankly shambolic - far better and far clearer for everyone if the ban/restrictions on air travel had never been lifted in the first place.

:cute: Yes ossie but it is not just the UK government and the ending of lockdown.

France, Spain, Italy, Germany, all unlocked and allowed quaranteen free travel within the EU, Spain is starting to climb again, as is France. France has shut the border to Spain, trapping French citizens in Spain.

It is not just the UK. They all thought they could lock down early and that would be it. All they did was to reduce tolerance for restrictions after lockdown.

Of course not helped by Brits in Magaluf acting like, well, idiot Brits abroad.

Maybe the message will finally get through, lock down or do not. If you do lock down, unlocking will create a surge. If you don't, you accept the cost. Unfortunately nobody really calculated the full cost of lockdown, they just knew they didn't want to pay the cost of not locking down.

Now it is coming home to roost that the cost of locking down may be higher than we are willing to pay. Sadly, once you start on that path there isn't really much of a way out of it.

I am not really bothered about when, where, how and why places locked down, but I am concerned about selfish Britons putting aside the information and advice given out by the government and then bitching and moaning when things go base over apex.

Anyone would think that this thing just crept up on them out of the blue and that they had no part to play in the mess they find themselves in. And to hear many of them saying that they will not self-isolate when they get back..... well!

So you have your 2 weeks annual leave from work to go to Spain, and whilst there quarantining when you return comes into effect. So those extra two weeks, do they come out the rest of your annual leave, do you take them as unpaid leave or does your employer just have to suck it up?

Shell, this from ACAS.
Self-isolating after returning to the UK

Some people returning to the UK must self-isolate (or 'quarantine') for 14 days, depending on the country they've travelled from.

Employees or workers are not entitled to SSP if they're self-isolating after returning from holiday or business travel and they cannot work from home.

They may be entitled to SSP for another reason, for example if they have coronavirus symptoms.

An employer can choose to pay the employee SSP, or a higher rate of sick pay, if they want to.

It's a good idea to check your workplace's policy to see if your workplace pays SSP or a higher rate of sick pay if anyone needs to self-isolate after returning to the UK.

That's why some are saying that they will not self-isolate .... "I have bills to pay" "I have to put food on the table - for the children". The thing is that their places of work know where they have been and that they should be self-isolating so anyone returning to work before the 14 days are up should be sent home to protect the other employees and any customers: and then be reported to the authorities.

Spot on Ossie, booking overseas holidays this year is a lottery and should be accepted as such.

I must admit that I am really amazed at the number of people who still don't understand that budget airlines will never make things easy for you when things go wrong.

It is one of the reasons for my default policy being that I will pay twice as much to NOT fly Ryanair.
